If you have been feeling a little uneasy about the status of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you’re likely not feeling any better today. Ubisoft posted the below image with the message that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is delayed again. It is now slated to be released on March 20, a five week push from its first delayed release date.
It’s no secret that Ubisoft is in a bit of a tumultuous situation at the moment. Recent releases have reportedly underperformed financially. That includes Star Wars Outlaws, XDefiant (which will be going offline in the coming months), and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Regardless of what you think about the quality of recent games, Ubisoft seems to be hemorrhaging money and good faith. With Assassin’s Creed Shadows delayed again, that seems to put an even higher importance on the game’s release.
What does the Assassin’s Creed Shadows delay tell us?
Recently, rumors have been popping in the picture that Ubisoft could be seeing a potential buyout from the Guillemot family (the current CEO of Ubisoft) and Tencent. An investors call today lead to no confirmation of that happening, but it is a storyline to pay attention to for the companies this year.
Focusing back on the Assassin’s Creed Shadows, after being delayed again, we wonder what kind of state the game is in. Typically, games in this franchise release playable, with the big exception being Assassin’s Creed Unity in 2014. For Ubisoft to push back its biggest franchise a second time at such an important time in its history is alarming. It could be focused on making sure the game is as close to perfect as possible at launch, but these kinds of messages seem to hide that things are not well on the development front.
