Overwatch 2 started its tests for the long-term viability of 6v6 in the current game and players have shown so much excitement over it that the game will be extending its current test until the next one begins, game director Aaron Keller said in a tweet. While the 2-2-2 test is currently in Quick Play, the Overwatch 2 6v6 experiment will be moved to Arcade tomorrow until the Min 1, Max 3 test starts at the midseason update.
People have been saying for a while that they wanted 6v6 back, and for the most part, it seems they have shown up for the recent tests. We wouldn’t say that this means the mode will be taking over the game again as its sole format yet, but it’s a good start for fans of this style. There are definitely tweeks still needed to make it feel better with hero balance, but those would likely come after the Min 1, Max 3 test.
What is the Min 1, Max 3 Overwatch 2 6v6 experiment?
If you have forgotten what Min 1, Max 3 is, Keller described it in his initial blog talking about these tests. Each player will have access to every hero when the match loads up. However, when three heroes in a role are chosen, that role will be locked off from the other teammates. From that point, if two heroes in the same role are chosen, the last player is stuck with the remaining role because there must be at least one of each role in the game so you aren’t going in with no support or tanks.
Since none of the 5v5 tests ever got extended, we would imagine the Limit 2 and Kingmaker tests didn’t get as much attention as wanted, but that’s just speculation. The Overwatch 2 6v6 experiment was the one people were looking forward to, so it’s not necessarily surprising it has higher engagement.
